Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education

Sustainability Tracking, Assessment and Rating System (STARS) is a transparent, self-reporting international framework for colleges and universities to measure and highlight their sustainability performance and commitment, developed by the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE). Stars focus on 135 sustainability performance measurements in three main areas: education and awareness, operations, and engagement. Participating institutions can receive a STARS platinum, gold, silver, or bronze certification. Iowa State University completed its first STARS certification in 2013, receiving gold, and was recertified again in 2017, 2019, and 2021.

I have loved getting to see all of the ways that sustainability is incorporated into all sectors of campus and learn from campus leadership about what factors they consider when it comes to making sustainability decisions. STARS has been such an amazing professional development opportunity and a great way to learn about sustainability initiatives at Iowa State and universities around the world!
